How it works
The 2026 limit is $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage, including employer contributions. At 55 or older you can add $1,000.
If you had a high-deductible plan for only part of the year, the limit is pro-rated by month. Under the last-month rule, being covered on December 1 lets you contribute the full amount, but you must then stay eligible through all of 2027.

Questions
What counts as a high-deductible plan in 2026?
A deductible of at least $1,700 self-only or $3,400 family, with out-of-pocket costs capped at $8,500 and $17,000.
What if I contribute too much?
Take out the excess and its earnings by your filing deadline. Otherwise a 6% excise tax applies each year it stays in.
