How it works
Savings rate is everything you save divided by everything you earn. Count pre-tax 401(k) and HSA contributions and the employer match in both numbers, along with what you save from take-home pay.
At a 5% real return, saving 50% of income reaches financial independence in about 17 years from zero; 25% takes about 32.
Questions
Should I use gross or net income?
Either works if you're consistent. This calculator uses take-home pay plus pre-tax savings, so taxes don't count as spending or saving.
Does paying down debt count?
Extra principal payments raise your net worth. Count them if they're a deliberate part of your plan.
