How it works
FERS and BRS members get an automatic 1% of basic pay from the agency, plus a match: dollar for dollar on the first 3% you contribute and 50 cents on the dollar on the next 2%. Contributing 5% gets the full 5% from the agency.
The 2026 employee limit is $24,500, plus $8,000 at 50 or older, or $11,250 at 60 to 63. Agency contributions don't count against it.
2026 figures: OPM FERS computation; TSP loans; IRS Notice 2025-67 (2026 retirement plan limits).
Questions
Which TSP fund should I use?
That depends on how long until you need the money and how much risk you can take. The L Funds mix the others by target date.
Do high earners have to make catch-ups as Roth?
From 2026, if your prior-year FICA wages were over $150,000, catch-up contributions must go into the Roth TSP.
