How it works
Freelance income owes self-employment tax (15.3% on most of it) plus income tax at your bracket. The 20% qualified business income deduction and the deduction for half of SE tax lower the income tax part.
Add W-2 wages if you have a job too. They fill the lower brackets first and count toward the Social Security wage base.
2026 figures: IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 (2026 inflation adjustments); IRS Notice 2025-67 (2026 retirement plan limits); SSA 2026 COLA fact sheet; IRS Notice 2026-10 and Announcement 2026-11 (mileage).
Questions
What if a client didn't send a 1099?
The income is taxable either way. Starting with 2026 payments, clients only have to send a 1099-NEC once they pay you $2,000 or more.
Can I deduct health insurance?
Self-employed health insurance premiums are deductible on Schedule 1 if you weren't eligible for an employer plan. That lowers income tax but not SE tax.
